King played college football at Tulane between 1995 and 1998. He finished 10th in voting for the 1998 Heisman Trophy.
He was drafted in the second round of the 1999 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, his hometown team (King graduated high school in Saint Petersburg). In the 2000 NFL season, he started all sixteen regular-season games for the Buccaneers.
After the Buc's cut him in 2004, he signed with the Arizona Cardinals as a free agent, but only started two games and was released at the end of the season. Then in 2006, he signed with the Detroit Lions. Since July of 2008, King, working as an ESPN analyst.
